Solar in HastingsA town roof can hold more than you think
Hastings is a Western Port town with a marina, a foreshore and a main street, and its housing reads like a town, not an estate. Back from the water the streets are weatherboard and brick homes from the 1960s through to the 1990s, with newer estates on the edges and blocks of units in between. Roofs are tin or tile, most are uncomplicated, and plenty have never had a panel on them.
The Hastings system we have written up shows what one of those roofs will take. Thirty-three Jinko panels went across a tin roof for 15.675kW, and five Sigenergy modules went into the garage for 45.2kWh of storage. The house is on single-phase power. That surprises people who have been told a battery that size needs three-phase. It does not. The family wanted the evening, the next morning and a grey day covered, so the storage was sized for that and the array was sized to fill it.
Two things about the location shape every design here. Salt air comes in off Western Port, so close to the marina and the foreshore we specify salt-rated mounting and outdoor gear and keep the battery under cover. And when the wind takes the power out on this side of the Peninsula, backup circuits are what keep the fridge and the lights going. Both are covered in the quote, alongside the other work we do in Hastings.
