Heating in HastingsThree kinds of house, three different jobs
There is no standard Hastings heating job, because there is no standard Hastings house. The older streets near the foreshore and the main street have 1960s and 1970s weatherboards, many with low-pitched roofs and little ceiling space. Further back are brick homes from the 1980s and 1990s with a proper roof cavity. Around and between them are units and villas, and on the edges, newer estate homes.
They are heated in just as many ways: a ducted heater in the roof, a space heater on the lounge wall, a wood fire, an old box air conditioner, or some combination. So we do not assume. At the site visit we check what the house runs on, what condition it is in and what it costs you, and we design from there. Whatever the starting point, the answer is reverse cycle, which costs around a third of the running cost of gas heating and gives the house cooling as well.
Being a Western Port town adds one more consideration. Salt carries in from the water and shortens the life of an unprotected outdoor coil, so on streets near the marina and foreshore we fit units with corrosion-protected outdoor coils and put them on the sheltered side of the house.
