What it means

Every gas appliance out, efficient electric in

Home electrification is the switch from gas heating, gas hot water and a gas cooktop to a reverse cycle system, a heat pump and an induction cooktop, then powering the lot from your own roof with solar and a battery. Done in the right order it removes the gas bill entirely, cuts the power bill because electric appliances are three to four times as efficient as gas, and makes the house safer and quieter.

Powerband has been doing this for Melbourne homes for over 15 years, and it is the only thing we do. Every trade involved (electrical, refrigeration, plumbing for hot water, solar) is in-house, so the design is done once and the crew that turns up knows the whole plan.

What we replace

Six swaps, one plan

Each one is a service in its own right. Together, and in the right order, they are a whole-home electrification.

Braemar ducted reverse cycle system installed by powerband electrical
Ducted gas heating Reverse cycle heating and cooling

Reverse cycle heating and cooling

The biggest gas user in most Melbourne homes. A ducted reverse cycle system heats for around a third of the running cost and cools in summer for free. We can usually reuse your existing ductwork.

Heat pump hot water

A heat pump makes hot water with about a quarter of the energy of a gas storage unit. VEU discounts and STCs come off the price, and it is normally a one-day changeover.

Gas cooktop Induction cooktop

Induction cooktop

Faster, safer and easier to clean than gas, with no combustion in the kitchen. We supply the cooktop, run the dedicated circuit and disconnect the gas so you can close the account.

Grid power Rooftop solar

Rooftop solar

Once the gas appliances are electric, your roof becomes the power station. We size the array to the new all-electric load, not to last year's bill.

Evening grid imports Home battery

Home battery

Stores the solar you make during the day for heating, cooking and hot water at night. Sigenergy, Tesla Powerwall and Sungrow, with Solar Victoria rebates and loans where eligible.

Petrol EV charging at home

EV charging at home

The last fossil fuel to go. A solar-aware charger fills the car from your roof during the day. We check switchboard capacity before we quote.

The order that pays

How we stage it

You can do it all at once or over a couple of years. Either way this is the order that saves the most money soonest, and every step is designed so the next one bolts straight on.

01

Site inspection and energy plan

We look at your switchboard, roof, gas appliances and bills, and write a plan showing the order of works, the cost after rebates and the payback on each step. Free, no obligation.

02

Heating, hot water and cooking

The gas appliances go first because they carry the biggest running costs and the biggest rebates. Most homes do heating and hot water together, cooktop when the kitchen suits.

03

Solar and battery

With the new electric load known, we size the solar and battery to cover it. Doing this after the appliance swap means you never buy a system that is too small.

04

EV charger and gas disconnection

Charger wired to run off the solar, gas meter abolished, supply charge gone. We hand over the compliance certificates and walk you through the controls.

Rebates

Three schemes, all applied for you

Victoria has the most generous electrification incentives in the country and most of them stack. The after-rebate figure is what you see on our quote.

01
Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU)

Discounts on heat pump hot water, reverse cycle heating and cooling and induction cooktops. Taken off the quote, not claimed back later.

02
Solar Victoria

Rebates plus interest-free loans on solar panels and home batteries for eligible households. We check eligibility and lodge the application.

03
Federal STCs

Small-scale technology certificates on solar and heat pump hot water. Applied at the point of sale.

Why Powerband

Why the whole job with one company

Electrification is a systems job. The value is in the design, and the design only works when one team owns all of it.

01
One crew for everything

Solar, HVAC, plumbing for hot water, electrical and EV. Powerband employs all of it, so there is no coordinating four trades and no gaps between them.

02
Rebates handled, not just mentioned

VEU, Solar Victoria and STCs are applied on the quote and lodged by us. You see the after-rebate price before you sign anything.

03
Designed as a system

Heat pump size, panel count, battery capacity and charger load are worked out together. Bolt them on one at a time from different installers and something is always undersized.

04
15 years, 30,000 customers

A-Grade licensed, VBA registered, ARC authorised, CEC accredited. Australian Small Business Champion 2025 in the Electrical category.

The whole experience of working with Powerband has been fantastic. From the get go they were helpful with the design, requirements and answering all the questions we had about the install. We couldn't be happier with choosing them for the job. Special thanks to Bailey and the team for getting the entire installation done in one day it was a huge job so for it to be done and to such a high standard is much appreciated Thanks everyone at Powerband for all you've done

We have just had a Braemer Dominator reverse cycle ducted system installed by the Powerband Electrical team to replace our gas-fired system. We were very happy with the whole process, from the sales/design discussions with Dayle to the installation by the team led by Julian and including Logan and Darren. Using the existing ducting had its challenges but the team overcame them well. Julian set up the AirTouch5 control system & zoning with us and with a sudden cold snap arriving it has proven simple to use to create a comfortable environment. In fact we are already finding it far more effective system than the considerably larger gas unit and a more uniform heat with less draughts. Thanks to the Powerband team. Ken in Glen Waverley

Petris and his electrical team did 2 inverter airconditioner installs as part of our whole solar system install. Great workers, good thinkers who could sort out a couple of small issues in short order and wonderful people to have around our house. Organised and professional. Highly recommend Powerband.

Had the Powerband team electrify out whole house. Updated the heating / cooling with split systems, replace gas cooktop & hot water and put solar on with a 30kw battery. No gas bill, solar is producing more energy than we consume. These days we barely even have the supply charge. As part of it, they put the package together of what we wanted and needed to future proof our house and showed us several options for paying for it, in the end we opted for a 5-year interest free loan. Looking at our numbers, most of the loan will be paid off from the savings from our gas and electricity savings. All the work and upgrades done and barely any out of pocket cost, nice.... The team were great - worked in with timing for the jobs when it worked for us. The boys on site were all great, friendly, polite and professional. Did the job well and packed up (and cleaned up) well. Happy to recommend Powerband to anyone wanting to electrify their house in a cost-effective way.

FAQ

Electrification questions

Anything else, call 0466 355 441. You will get an electrician, not a call centre.

What is home electrification?

Replacing the gas appliances in a home (ducted or space heating, hot water and the cooktop) with efficient electric ones, usually a reverse cycle system, a heat pump hot water unit and an induction cooktop, then powering them from rooftop solar and a battery. The result is no gas bill, a smaller power bill and a safer house.

How much does it cost to electrify a home in Melbourne?

It depends on the size of the house and what you already have. As a guide, heating and hot water are the two big items, solar and battery the third. Victorian rebates take a meaningful chunk off each step, and Solar Victoria offers interest-free loans for solar and batteries. We give you a written figure after rebates at the site inspection, not a range.

Can I do it in stages?

Yes, and most people do. We recommend heating or hot water first because they carry the largest running costs and rebates, then solar and battery sized to the new load, then the cooktop and EV charger. Every stage is designed so the next one bolts on without redoing anything.

Will my power bill go up when I get rid of gas?

Your electricity use goes up, your total energy bill comes down. A reverse cycle system delivers three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity, and a heat pump does the same for hot water, so you are buying far less energy overall. Add solar and most of that electricity is free.

What rebates are available in Victoria right now?

Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) for heat pump hot water, reverse cycle heating and cooling and induction cooktops. Solar Victoria rebates and interest-free loans for solar panels and batteries. Federal STCs on solar and heat pump hot water. Eligibility depends on the property and household, and we check it for you.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard?

Often, yes. An all-electric home with an EV charger draws more than a 1960s switchboard was built for. We assess it at the inspection and include any upgrade in the quote so it is never a surprise on the day.

Which suburbs do you cover?

All of Melbourne, from the inner suburbs to the Mornington Peninsula. We are based in Somerville. See the locations page or call and we will confirm.
