Choosing an inverter

Four questions that pick the right one

We ask these at the site inspection. The answers do the choosing.

Solar panels on a melbourne roof installed by powerband electrical
  1. 01
    Planning a battery? Go hybrid

A hybrid inverter manages panels and battery together. Buying a string inverter now and a battery later means paying for two inverters. Sigenergy, Powerwall 3, Fronius GEN24 and Sungrow SH are all hybrids.

  2. 02
    Shaded or complicated roof? Optimisers

Trees, dormers, three orientations. SolarEdge optimisers stop one shaded panel dragging down the whole string and show you every panel in the app.

  3. 03
Simple north-facing roof, no battery plans? String

A quality string inverter from Fronius or GoodWe does the job for less. No point paying for hybrid or optimisers you will not use.

  4. 04
Warranty and support decide the rest

Every inverter here has Australian warranty support. Inverters are the component most likely to be replaced in a system's life, so we do not install anything we cannot get parts and service for locally.

Rebates

Incentives on the whole system

The inverter is part of the solar system for rebate purposes. All applied on the quote.

01
Solar Victoria rebate and loan

Applies to the whole solar system including the inverter, for eligible owner-occupiers. Plus an interest-free loan. Lodged by us.

02
Small-scale technology certificates

The federal solar incentive, applied at the point of sale on the full system. Nothing to claim back.

03
Battery incentives with a hybrid

Choose a hybrid now and the Solar Victoria and federal battery incentives are available when the battery goes in, without replacing the inverter.

Why Powerband

Inverters from the crew that does the whole house

We know what the inverter will be feeding, because we install that too.

01
We size the inverter to the system, not the box

Panel count, orientation, battery capacity and export limit all feed into the inverter choice. Undersize it and you clip production; oversize it and you paid for nothing.

02
Hybrid by default when a battery is coming

If you are going all-electric, a battery is coming eventually. We specify hybrid so it bolts on without redoing anything.

03
Installed and commissioned by our own electricians

CEC-accredited, A-Grade, in-house. Monitoring set up on your phone, export limit handled with your retailer, compliance paperwork lodged.

04
Brands we can stand behind

Sigenergy, Tesla, Fronius, SolarEdge, Sungrow, GoodWe. All with Australian support, all proven on our own jobs.

The whole experience of working with Powerband has been fantastic. From the get go they were helpful with the design, requirements and answering all the questions we had about the install. We couldn't be happier with choosing them for the job. Special thanks to Bailey and the team for getting the entire installation done in one day it was a huge job so for it to be done and to such a high standard is much appreciated Thanks everyone at Powerband for all you've done

We have just had a Braemer Dominator reverse cycle ducted system installed by the Powerband Electrical team to replace our gas-fired system. We were very happy with the whole process, from the sales/design discussions with Dayle to the installation by the team led by Julian and including Logan and Darren. Using the existing ducting had its challenges but the team overcame them well. Julian set up the AirTouch5 control system & zoning with us and with a sudden cold snap arriving it has proven simple to use to create a comfortable environment. In fact we are already finding it far more effective system than the considerably larger gas unit and a more uniform heat with less draughts. Thanks to the Powerband team. Ken in Glen Waverley

Petris and his electrical team did 2 inverter airconditioner installs as part of our whole solar system install. Great workers, good thinkers who could sort out a couple of small issues in short order and wonderful people to have around our house. Organised and professional. Highly recommend Powerband.

Had the Powerband team electrify out whole house. Updated the heating / cooling with split systems, replace gas cooktop & hot water and put solar on with a 30kw battery. No gas bill, solar is producing more energy than we consume. These days we barely even have the supply charge. As part of it, they put the package together of what we wanted and needed to future proof our house and showed us several options for paying for it, in the end we opted for a 5-year interest free loan. Looking at our numbers, most of the loan will be paid off from the savings from our gas and electricity savings. All the work and upgrades done and barely any out of pocket cost, nice.... The team were great - worked in with timing for the jobs when it worked for us. The boys on site were all great, friendly, polite and professional. Did the job well and packed up (and cleaned up) well. Happy to recommend Powerband to anyone wanting to electrify their house in a cost-effective way.

FAQ

Inverter questions

Anything else, call 0466 355 441. You will get an electrician, not a salesperson.

What does a solar inverter actually do?

Panels produce DC power. The inverter converts it to the AC your home runs on, manages the connection to the grid, and, in a hybrid, charges and discharges the battery. It is the brain of the system, and the component most likely to be replaced during the panels' 25-year life.

Hybrid or string inverter?

Hybrid if a battery is installed now or planned. String if you have a simple roof, no battery plans and want the lowest cost. We will tell you which, and why, at the design stage.

Do I need optimisers or microinverters?

Only if your roof has shading, multiple orientations or a complex layout. On a clear north-facing roof they add cost without adding production. SolarEdge is our optimiser system of choice when it is warranted.

How long do inverters last?

Typically 10 to 15 years. Warranties are 10 years on most of the brands here, with extensions available on some. This is why we weight warranty support heavily in the choice.

Can I replace my old inverter with a hybrid and add a battery?

Usually, yes. If your existing string inverter is due for replacement, swapping to a hybrid and adding a battery at the same time is often the most cost-effective path. We check your panels and switchboard first.

Which inverter works with Tesla Powerwall?

Powerwall 3 has its own inverter built in, so panels connect directly. Earlier Powerwall 2 units work alongside any existing string inverter. We install both configurations.

Which suburbs do you cover?

All of Melbourne, from the inner suburbs to the Mornington Peninsula. We are based in Somerville. See the locations page or call and we will confirm.
