Solar in ClydeWhen there is no gas bill, the power bill does all the work
A decade ago Clyde was farmland. The estates have gone up since about 2015, and the latest stages were built after Victoria stopped new gas connections for new homes. A house in those streets has reverse cycle heating, electric hot water and an electric cooktop from day one. Nothing is wrong with that, but it means every bit of energy the family uses arrives through one meter, most of it between late afternoon and bedtime.
That shape of use is what solar with a battery is built for. The panels fill the battery and run the hot water through the middle of the day, and the battery carries the cooking, heating and lights after dark. Our written-up Clyde job is a good example: an 8.55kW array and 16.64kWh of GoodWe storage on a new build, switched on before the owner had moved the furniture in.
Clyde blocks are small, and so are the roofs. We would sooner fit the right number of good panels on the faces that earn their keep than cover a south face to hit a bigger number. Earlier stages that do have gas are a different job again, where we allow for the appliances that will go electric later. You can read about our other work on the Clyde page.
