Solar in OfficerGas on one street, none on the next
Officer has grown from a railway station and a strip of farms into one of the busiest growth areas in Cardinia Shire, and nearly all of its housing is estate-built. That makes the roofs predictable: concrete tile or Colorbond, a garage at the front, often a second storey, and a switchboard modern enough to take a battery without a rebuild. The variable is the household, not the house.
The biggest difference between Officer homes is gas. Houses built through the 2010s mostly came with gas ducted heating and gas hot water, so the solar we design for them has to cover today's load and the day those appliances are replaced. Houses on the newest streets were built with no gas connection at all. Heating, hot water and cooking are already on the meter, the evening peak is bigger as a result, and that is exactly the load a battery is built for.
Estate blocks are compact, so the battery usually goes on the garage wall or inside the garage near the switchboard, and the panel layout has to work around the short roof faces of a two-storey design. We check all of it on one site visit, alongside the rest of our work in Officer.
