Solar in CheltenhamThe roof is easy. The sizing is the real decision
Most of Cheltenham was built in the years after the war: single-storey brick veneer and weatherboard homes with hipped tile roofs, set on blocks that were generous before half of them were split for villa units and townhouses. For solar that is good news. A postwar hip usually has a clean north or west face, a reachable roof and room for a full array, and very few of these houses have more than a small, older system on them.
The harder question is how big to go. Nearly every original Cheltenham house we look at still heats with gas, warms its water with gas and cooks on gas. When the heater gives out, the reverse cycle that replaces it runs on electricity, and so does a heat pump and an induction cooktop after that. A system sized only for today's bill is too small the winter you change the heating. We ask what is coming and design the array and battery for it.
Units and townhouses are the other half of the suburb. A villa unit roof is often shared or split between owners, so we confirm which faces are yours and what the owners corporation needs to see before we draw a layout. The rest of our work in the area is on the Cheltenham service page.
