What SolarEdge does differentlyEvery panel works on its own, not as a chain
On a normal string inverter the panels are wired in series, so the string produces what its weakest panel produces. A gum tree over one corner of the roof at 3pm drags down the whole string. SolarEdge fixes that with a small power optimiser bolted under each panel. Each panel runs at its own peak, the inverter just converts what comes down the cable, and the app shows you every panel individually so a fault is obvious instead of hidden in an average.
The trade-off is cost. Optimisers add money to a system, and on a clear, north-facing, single-plane roof they add very little production. That is why we do not put SolarEdge on every job. On a roof with shade, three orientations, dormers or a chimney in the wrong place, it is the right call and often the only way to get a decent yield. System design is on the solar and battery page; this page is about the SolarEdge hardware.
