Solar in RyeWhen the grid will not take a single watt
The Rye home we have written up came with a condition most solar buyers never hear about. The network approved the connection with a zero export limit, so the system could not send any power back to the grid at all. Plenty of installers would quote a smaller system or walk away. We designed for it instead: 14.08kW of Jinko Tiger Neo Satin panels, a Sigen Hybrid inverter and 24.18kWh of battery, sized so the house soaks up what the roof makes.
Not every Rye connection carries a limit like that, but the lesson applies to every roof in town. Feed-in tariffs are now a few cents, so a system that exports half its output is earning very little on that half. A Rye home is better served by a battery large enough to carry the evening, and by moving loads such as hot water, heating and a pool pump into the daylight hours.
Rye also stretches right across the peninsula, from the bay side and the pier to the back beach on Bass Strait. Homes near the ocean beach cop strong salt wind, sandy blocks and moonah scrub, so the hardware and battery position are chosen for that, just as they are for the rest of our work in Rye.
