EV charging in SomervilleThree-phase, sheds and long runs
Somerville is home for us. The depot is in Speedwell Street, and the jobs around town are some of the quickest we do. EV charging here splits two ways. In the streets near the township it looks like most suburbs: a garage, a switchboard nearby and a short run. Out on the acreage the car might live in a shed or a carport a long way from the house, and the supply is often three-phase.
Three-phase is what makes Somerville interesting. It opens up 11kW, or up to 22kW where the car can take it, against about 7kW on a single-phase 32A circuit, which adds roughly 40km of range per hour. On a property with a big array and a battery, a fast charger can take a large share of its energy from the roof. The Somerville job on this page pairs a three-phase Sigen system and 45kWh of storage with a Sigen EV charger.
Long runs to a shed need the cable sized for the distance and protected along the way, and the switchboard has to carry the charger alongside pumps, workshops and whatever else is on the property. We check all of that before quoting, as we do for the rest of our work in Somerville.
