EV charging in Langwarrin

Find out what the house has, then pick the charger

Langwarrin has a mix of single-phase and three-phase supply, depending on the street and when the connection went in, and that is the first thing we check. Single-phase gives you a 7kW charger on a 32A circuit, roughly 40km of range for every hour on charge. Three-phase opens up 11kW, or up to 22kW where the car can take it. Neither is better for everyone, and for most commutes a 7kW charger overnight is plenty.

The second check is the switchboard. A lot of Langwarrin homes went up between the 1960s and the 1980s and still have an older board that needs work before a charger can draw 32 amps for hours. On one Langwarrin job, a busy family home, the switchboard in the garage was upgraded as part of a single design that also took in 21.85kW of solar, a 45.2kWh battery, a heat pump and the EV charger.

That job is a good picture of how EV chargers Langwarrin families ask about tend to end up: part of a bigger plan rather than a stand-alone gadget. Even if you only want the charger now, we wire it so solar can drive it later. More on everything else we do in Langwarrin.

Costs and incentives

No charger rebate, but cheaper kilometres

Victoria has no rebate on home EV chargers. Here is what does help.

01
Solar to fill the tank

With the charger set to surplus solar, the car takes power you would otherwise export. Panels and inverters keep their own incentives, covered on solar and battery in Langwarrin.

02
A fixed price on the charger

No VEU, no Solar Victoria rebate and nothing to claim. One price for the charger, circuit and any board upgrade.

03
Battery discount for night charging

If you want to charge after dark from stored solar, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount takes around 30 percent off an approved battery, with no income test.

The whole experience of working with Powerband has been fantastic. From the get go they were helpful with the design, requirements and answering all the questions we had about the install. We couldn't be happier with choosing them for the job. Special thanks to Bailey and the team for getting the entire installation done in one day it was a huge job so for it to be done and to such a high standard is much appreciated Thanks everyone at Powerband for all you've done

We have just had a Braemer Dominator reverse cycle ducted system installed by the Powerband Electrical team to replace our gas-fired system. We were very happy with the whole process, from the sales/design discussions with Dayle to the installation by the team led by Julian and including Logan and Darren. Using the existing ducting had its challenges but the team overcame them well. Julian set up the AirTouch5 control system & zoning with us and with a sudden cold snap arriving it has proven simple to use to create a comfortable environment. In fact we are already finding it far more effective system than the considerably larger gas unit and a more uniform heat with less draughts. Thanks to the Powerband team. Ken in Glen Waverley

Petris and his electrical team did 2 inverter airconditioner installs as part of our whole solar system install. Great workers, good thinkers who could sort out a couple of small issues in short order and wonderful people to have around our house. Organised and professional. Highly recommend Powerband.

Had the Powerband team electrify out whole house. Updated the heating / cooling with split systems, replace gas cooktop & hot water and put solar on with a 30kw battery. No gas bill, solar is producing more energy than we consume. These days we barely even have the supply charge. As part of it, they put the package together of what we wanted and needed to future proof our house and showed us several options for paying for it, in the end we opted for a 5-year interest free loan. Looking at our numbers, most of the loan will be paid off from the savings from our gas and electricity savings. All the work and upgrades done and barely any out of pocket cost, nice.... The team were great - worked in with timing for the jobs when it worked for us. The boys on site were all great, friendly, polite and professional. Did the job well and packed up (and cleaned up) well. Happy to recommend Powerband to anyone wanting to electrify their house in a cost-effective way.

FAQ

Langwarrin EV charger questions

Anything else, call 0466 355 441. You will get an electrician on the phone.

How do I know if my Langwarrin home is single or three-phase?

We check at the site visit. Langwarrin has both, depending on the street and the age of the connection, and it decides how fast a charger can go.

My switchboard is old. Will it need replacing?

Possibly. Many older Langwarrin boards need work before a charger can run safely. We check it first and include any upgrade in the fixed price.

Can the charger run off solar I add later?

Yes. We set it up so solar charging can be switched on when panels go in, and choose a charger that suits the inverter you are likely to get.

How much range does a home charger add?

A 7kW single-phase charger on a 32A circuit adds roughly 40km per hour. On three-phase, 11kW or up to 22kW is possible if your car accepts it.

Is there a rebate on EV chargers in Langwarrin?

No. There is no Victorian rebate for home EV chargers, and we do not process one.

Can I charge in the garage and the carport?

We mount the charger where the car parks most and run a dedicated circuit to it. If two parking spots matter, we talk through the options at the visit.
