Frankston

The suburb we drive through every day

Frankston is the closest big suburb to our Somerville depot, and a lot of Powerband's 30,000 jobs have been done between Frankston Station and the Peninsula Link. It is a suburb of two halves for our work: the flat streets between the Nepean Highway and Cranbourne Road are mostly 1960s to 1980s brick veneer on decent blocks, nearly all of it built with ducted gas heating and a gas storage hot water unit, while Frankston South and the Olivers Hill end run to bigger homes on sloping blocks with more roof and more solar potential.

That first half is where the savings are. A ducted gas heater that has done 25 winters is expensive to run and close to the end of its life, and Frankston sits in the Victorian Energy Upgrades area, so swapping it for a ducted reverse cycle system using the existing ducts attracts the VEU discount and gives the house cooling for the first time. Heat pump hot water is the same story. Most of those homes have roof space for 6.6kW or more of solar facing somewhere useful, and with a battery the evening peak is covered.

Frankston City Council has no heritage overlays that affect panel placement on the vast majority of homes, and mains gas runs through the whole suburb, which means the gas disconnection at the end of a full home electrification is straightforward. Because we are 15 minutes away, a Frankston site inspection is usually within a few days of the call, and a heat pump changeover or split system install is normally a single visit.

What we do in Frankston

Every service, written for Frankston homes

The order below is the order that pays back fastest in Frankston's 1960s to 80s brick veneer. Heating and hot water first, then solar and battery sized to the new electric load, then the rest.

The most common job we do in Frankston is pulling a 20-plus-year-old ducted gas heater out of a brick veneer roof and putting a Braemar or Mitsubishi reverse cycle unit in its place, on the same ducts. The house gets cooling for the first time, the gas bill drops, and the VEU discount comes off the install. For the smaller weatherboards near the station and the units along Beach Street, a split system or two does the job for less.

  • Braemar, Mitsubishi Electric, Hisense
  • Existing ducts reused where sound
  • VEU discount on the quote
Heating & Cooling across Melbourne

Most Frankston homes still have a gas storage tank against the side wall, and when it fails it is usually replaced like for like without anyone asking the question. The better answer is a heat pump: Reclaim, iStore or Emerald, installed in a day by our plumber and electrician together, with VEU and STCs both applied. It uses about a quarter of the energy and it is normally the fastest-paying step in getting a Frankston house off gas.

  • Reclaim, iStore, Emerald
  • One-day changeover
  • VEU and STCs applied
Hot Water Systems across Melbourne

Frankston roofs are mostly tile, mostly unshaded and mostly north or east facing, which makes solar straightforward. A standard block takes 6.6kW to 10kW; the bigger homes in Frankston South take more. Solar uptake in 3199 is still below the outer south-east, so a lot of roofs here are first systems rather than upgrades. We size to your usage and to whatever gas appliances you are replacing, and we lodge the Solar Victoria rebate and loan and the federal battery discount for you.

  • 6.6kW to 13kW typical
  • Sigenergy, Tesla Powerwall, Sungrow
  • Solar Victoria rebate and loan lodged
Solar & Battery across Melbourne

A full Frankston electrification is usually heating first, hot water second, then solar and battery sized to the new load, then the cooktop, then the gas meter abolished. Because we are 15 minutes away, we can stage it over a few visits without the scheduling dragging, and the whole thing is designed once at the first inspection so nothing has to be redone.

  • Staged plan from one inspection
  • Gas meter abolishment arranged
  • Every trade in-house

Once the heating and hot water are electric, the cooktop is the last gas appliance in most Frankston kitchens and the reason the supply charge keeps arriving. We supply and install the induction cooktop, run the dedicated circuit from the switchboard and cap the gas, usually in half a day. VEU discount applies.

Induction Cooktops across Melbourne

Frankston has a mix of single and three-phase supply depending on the street and the age of the connection. We check which you have before we quote a Tesla Wall Connector, Sigenergy or Zappi charger, and we set it up to charge from your solar first. Switchboard upgrades are common in the older homes and are included in the fixed price when needed.

EV Chargers across Melbourne

Frankston has a large rental market, from the units around the CBD to the houses in Frankston North. We do the two-yearly electrical safety checks Victorian rental providers need, smoke alarm and switchboard compliance, and the gas-to-electric upgrades property managers are increasingly asked for, with per-property reports and tenant access handled by us.

Real Estate across Melbourne

Infill development is steady across Frankston, particularly townhouses on the larger old blocks. New Victorian homes are all-electric, so we deliver the electrical fit-out and the full electric package (solar, reverse cycle, heat pump, induction, EV circuit) as one contractor, priced from the plans.

Why Powerband here

Fifteen minutes from the depot

Frankston is our home turf. That shows in how fast we quote and how many of the crew know the streets.

01
Local, not a franchise

We are based in Somerville. Frankston is the first suburb on the way to almost every job we do, so inspections are quick to book and follow-ups are a phone call, not a scheduling exercise.

02
We know these houses

Brick veneer on a slab with ducted gas in the roof and a storage tank against the side wall. We have converted hundreds of them and we can tell you on the phone roughly what yours will cost after rebates.

03
VEU, Solar Victoria and STCs applied

Frankston qualifies for every Victorian and federal incentive going. All of them are on the quote before you see it, and we lodge the paperwork.

04
A-Grade licensed, in-house crews

Electrical, refrigeration and plumbing for hot water all done by Powerband employees. No subcontractors, and the same faces from quote to handover.

The whole experience of working with Powerband has been fantastic. From the get go they were helpful with the design, requirements and answering all the questions we had about the install. We couldn't be happier with choosing them for the job. Special thanks to Bailey and the team for getting the entire installation done in one day it was a huge job so for it to be done and to such a high standard is much appreciated Thanks everyone at Powerband for all you've done

We have just had a Braemer Dominator reverse cycle ducted system installed by the Powerband Electrical team to replace our gas-fired system. We were very happy with the whole process, from the sales/design discussions with Dayle to the installation by the team led by Julian and including Logan and Darren. Using the existing ducting had its challenges but the team overcame them well. Julian set up the AirTouch5 control system & zoning with us and with a sudden cold snap arriving it has proven simple to use to create a comfortable environment. In fact we are already finding it far more effective system than the considerably larger gas unit and a more uniform heat with less draughts. Thanks to the Powerband team. Ken in Glen Waverley

Petris and his electrical team did 2 inverter airconditioner installs as part of our whole solar system install. Great workers, good thinkers who could sort out a couple of small issues in short order and wonderful people to have around our house. Organised and professional. Highly recommend Powerband.

Had the Powerband team electrify out whole house. Updated the heating / cooling with split systems, replace gas cooktop & hot water and put solar on with a 30kw battery. No gas bill, solar is producing more energy than we consume. These days we barely even have the supply charge. As part of it, they put the package together of what we wanted and needed to future proof our house and showed us several options for paying for it, in the end we opted for a 5-year interest free loan. Looking at our numbers, most of the loan will be paid off from the savings from our gas and electricity savings. All the work and upgrades done and barely any out of pocket cost, nice.... The team were great - worked in with timing for the jobs when it worked for us. The boys on site were all great, friendly, polite and professional. Did the job well and packed up (and cleaned up) well. Happy to recommend Powerband to anyone wanting to electrify their house in a cost-effective way.

FAQ

Frankston questions

Anything else, call 0466 355 441.

Is Frankston eligible for Victorian Energy Upgrades discounts?

Yes. Frankston is inside the VEU area, so heat pump hot water, reverse cycle heating and cooling and induction cooktops all attract discounts, with the largest when you are replacing gas. We apply them on the quote.

Can you replace ducted gas heating in a Frankston home using the existing ducts?

In most 1960s to 80s Frankston homes, yes. We inspect the ducts and the plenum, and if they are sound the reverse cycle unit connects to them. That is the single biggest saving in the job.

How quickly can you get to Frankston for a quote?

Usually within a few days. Our depot is in Somerville, about 15 minutes away, and Frankston is on the route to most of our work.

Do Frankston homes have enough roof for solar and a battery?

Nearly all of them. A standard Frankston brick veneer takes 6.6kW to 10kW comfortably, and the larger Frankston South blocks take more. We size to your usage and to whatever gas appliances you are replacing.

Do you cover Frankston North, Frankston South and Karingal?

Yes. All of the 3199 and 3200 postcodes, plus Seaford, Langwarrin, Carrum Downs and Mount Eliza next door.
