Heating in BerwickWhole estates of heaters, ageing together
Berwick's estates were built in waves, and the heating was installed in the same waves. Timbarra and Brentwood Park went up through the 1990s and 2000s with a ducted gas heater in every roof and, in most, add-on or evaporative cooling beside it. Those heaters are now 15 to 30 years old and are failing street by street. When one goes, the owner is choosing between another gas heater and a reverse cycle system that replaces the heater and the cooler in one.
The design depends on the house. Single-storey homes with an open roof space get the full job: old heater and ducts out, ducted reverse cycle in, new R1.5 insulated ducts to every room. Berwick also has a lot of two-storey homes where the ducts to the ground floor run through the space between the floors and cannot be reached. That is where a Braemar Dominator is the right choice. It takes the gas heater's place, keeps the existing ducts and controls the airflow through them.
Large Berwick homes also need zoning. Six to ten outlets across two living areas and four or five bedrooms should not all run at once, and an AirTouch 5 with a sensor in each zone is what keeps the running cost down. More on what else we do in Berwick.
