Heating in Capel SoundThe cheapest time to go electric is mid-renovation
A lot of Capel Sound homes are mid-change. Original beach houses are being extended, reclad or knocked down, and older brick homes are getting new kitchens and bathrooms. If the plaster is coming off or the roof space is open anyway, that is the cheapest moment to pull out the old gas heater and run new ducts, with no ceilings to patch afterwards.
Many of these homes still have a ducted gas heater and a gas storage tank on the side wall. We replace the heater with ducted reverse cycle on new R1.5 insulated ducts sized to the new unit, typically one to two days on site, or with Mitsubishi Electric or Hisense split systems where a smaller cottage does not need ducts. Reverse cycle heats for around a third of the running cost of gas heating and adds cooling the house never had.
The hot water is often the next thing on the list. A heat pump from Emerald, Reclaim or iStore can go in during the same visit, and with heating and hot water both electric, the cooktop is the last gas appliance standing. We fit it all in with the rest of our work in Capel Sound.
