Heating in Mount WaverleyFloor vents, a gas heater and cold feet in summer
A lot of Mount Waverley homes sit on stumps rather than a slab, and many of them were heated the same way for decades: a ducted gas unit pushing warm air through vents in the floor. It works for heating, because warm air rises. It works badly for cooling, which is why so many of these homes ended up with an evaporative unit on the roof or a split in the lounge as well.
When the gas heater is replaced with ducted reverse cycle, we usually run new R1.5 insulated ducts through the roof space to ceiling outlets. Cool air falls from the ceiling and spreads across the room, warm air still reaches the floor with good outlets and zoning, and the old underfloor ducts can be retired. Heating then costs around a third of what gas did to run. Whether the roof space suits it is something we check on site, not something we assume.
Units, townhouses and older weatherboards near the village often have no roof room for ducts, and splits or a multi-head are the better answer there. We service Mount Waverley from our Somerville depot, about 50 minutes away, and the advice is the same either way. More on our work in Mount Waverley.
