Heating in Endeavour HillsHot upstairs, cold downstairs, and a heater from the 1980s
If you live in a split-level or two-storey Endeavour Hills home, you already know the problem. Warm air climbs. With one gas heater and one thermostat, the upper level overheats while the lower rooms stay cool, and in summer the top floor is the last place anyone wants to sleep. The heater doing this is either the one the builder installed in the 1970s or 80s or its replacement from 20-odd years ago, and both are near the end.
Changing to ducted reverse cycle fixes the running cost and gives the house cooling, but the layout of these homes decides how the job is done. Where the ducts sit in an open roof space we take them out with the heater and install new R1.5 insulated ducts sized for the new unit. That is the standard job and the one we prefer. In some two-storey and split-level homes, though, part of the ductwork runs between floors or behind finished walls where it cannot be replaced.
For those houses there is the Braemar Dominator, which takes the place of the gas heater, keeps the existing ducts and controls the airflow through them. Which route your home takes comes down to an inspection, not a guess. Either way the system is zoned by level so each part of the house can be set on its own.
