The easiest gas swap

Same tank, same taps, a quarter of the bill

Hot water is usually 20 to 30 percent of a Melbourne home's energy use, and a gas storage unit is one of the least efficient ways to make it. A heat pump does the same job with about a quarter of the energy, qualifies for both Victorian and federal incentives, and can be timed to run on your own solar. It is normally the first thing we recommend when a home starts going off gas, because it is the quickest to pay back.

Powerband installs Reclaim, iStore, Emerald and Haier heat pumps across Melbourne. Our own plumbers and A-Grade electricians do the changeover in one visit, including the gas disconnection. If you are also looking at heating and cooling, solar or the whole house, we design it as one plan.

How it works

Where the 75% saving comes from

A heat pump does not make heat, it moves it. That is why it beats a gas or electric element on every bill.

Istore heat pump hot water unit installed beside a melbourne home
  1. 01
It pulls heat from the air

A small compressor draws warmth out of the outside air, the same way a reverse cycle air conditioner does in heating mode.

  2. 02
    Concentrates it into the tank

That heat is transferred into the water. For every unit of electricity in, you get three to four units of heat out.

  3. 03
    Times itself to your solar

Set to run through the middle of the day, it heats almost entirely on rooftop solar that would otherwise be exported for cents.

  4. 04
    Same tank, same taps

It is a storage system like the one you have now. Same hot water at the tap, the same recovery for a family, a quarter of the energy.

Rebates and running costs

Two rebates that stack

VEU and STCs both apply to heat pump hot water, and both come off the quote before you see it.

01
Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU)

Discounts on heat pump hot water, largest when you are replacing a gas unit. Applied on the quote, lodged by us.

02
Federal STCs

Small-scale technology certificates on heat pump hot water, applied as a discount at the point of sale. The two incentives stack.

03
Run it on your own solar

Timed to heat through the middle of the day, a heat pump uses solar that would otherwise be exported for a few cents. Effectively free hot water most of the year.

Why Powerband

Hot water from the crew that does the whole house

A plumber sells you a tank. We install the tank, wire it, disconnect the gas and set it to your solar, then do the rest of the house when you are ready.

01
Electrical and plumbing, one visit

Heat pumps need a plumber and an electrician. We turn up with both, so a gas-to-heat-pump swap is normally done in a day, including the gas disconnection.

02
VEU and STCs on the quote

Heat pump hot water qualifies for both a Victorian Energy Upgrades discount and federal STCs. Both are applied before you sign, not claimed back later.

03
Sized and sited properly

Tank size to the household, unit placed for airflow and noise, drainage sorted, timer set to your solar. The details that decide whether a heat pump is brilliant or annoying.

04
Brands we stand behind

Reclaim, iStore, Emerald and Haier. Long warranties, Australian support, parts we can get. No grey imports.

The whole experience of working with Powerband has been fantastic. From the get go they were helpful with the design, requirements and answering all the questions we had about the install. We couldn't be happier with choosing them for the job. Special thanks to Bailey and the team for getting the entire installation done in one day it was a huge job so for it to be done and to such a high standard is much appreciated Thanks everyone at Powerband for all you've done

We have just had a Braemer Dominator reverse cycle ducted system installed by the Powerband Electrical team to replace our gas-fired system. We were very happy with the whole process, from the sales/design discussions with Dayle to the installation by the team led by Julian and including Logan and Darren. Using the existing ducting had its challenges but the team overcame them well. Julian set up the AirTouch5 control system & zoning with us and with a sudden cold snap arriving it has proven simple to use to create a comfortable environment. In fact we are already finding it far more effective system than the considerably larger gas unit and a more uniform heat with less draughts. Thanks to the Powerband team. Ken in Glen Waverley

Petris and his electrical team did 2 inverter airconditioner installs as part of our whole solar system install. Great workers, good thinkers who could sort out a couple of small issues in short order and wonderful people to have around our house. Organised and professional. Highly recommend Powerband.

Had the Powerband team electrify out whole house. Updated the heating / cooling with split systems, replace gas cooktop & hot water and put solar on with a 30kw battery. No gas bill, solar is producing more energy than we consume. These days we barely even have the supply charge. As part of it, they put the package together of what we wanted and needed to future proof our house and showed us several options for paying for it, in the end we opted for a 5-year interest free loan. Looking at our numbers, most of the loan will be paid off from the savings from our gas and electricity savings. All the work and upgrades done and barely any out of pocket cost, nice.... The team were great - worked in with timing for the jobs when it worked for us. The boys on site were all great, friendly, polite and professional. Did the job well and packed up (and cleaned up) well. Happy to recommend Powerband to anyone wanting to electrify their house in a cost-effective way.

FAQ

Hot water questions

Anything else, call 0466 355 441. You will get a plumber or an electrician, not a salesperson.

Is a heat pump hot water system worth it in Melbourne?

Yes. It uses about a quarter of the energy of a gas or electric storage unit, qualifies for VEU discounts and STCs, and runs almost free if timed to your solar. For most homes it is the fastest-paying step in going off gas.

How much does heat pump hot water cost installed?

It depends on the unit, the tank size and what it is replacing. VEU and STCs come off the top and can be significant, especially when replacing gas. We quote a fixed after-rebate figure at the site inspection.

Do heat pumps work in a cold Melbourne winter?

Yes. The units we install are rated to operate well below freezing (the Haier to -7C) and Melbourne rarely gets close. They are less efficient on a frosty morning than a warm afternoon, which is another reason we schedule them to run through the middle of the day.

Will it run out of hot water?

Not if it is sized right. A 270L to 300L tank suits a family of four to six with normal use. We size to your household and usage pattern, not to whatever is on the truck.

Are heat pumps noisy?

Modern units run at 39 to 46dB, roughly a quiet conversation. We site them away from bedrooms and neighbours' windows, which matters more than the decibel figure.

Can you replace my gas hot water with a heat pump in one day?

Usually, yes. We disconnect and remove the old unit, run the new circuit, plumb the heat pump and commission it in a single visit. If your switchboard needs work we tell you at the quote stage.

Do you do hot water repairs?

We replace systems rather than repair old ones. If your gas or electric storage unit has failed, a heat pump replacement with the rebates applied is usually cheaper than a like-for-like gas unit within a couple of years of running costs.

Which suburbs do you cover?

All of Melbourne, from the inner suburbs to the Mornington Peninsula. We are based in Somerville. See the locations page or call and we will confirm.
