The gas heating swap

One unit, same ducts, heating and cooling

Most Melbourne homes built before 2010 heat with ducted gas and cool with nothing, or with a split in the lounge. A ducted reverse cycle system replaces the gas heater in the same spot, connects to the ducts you already have, and does both jobs for around a third of the running cost of gas heating. Units like the Braemar Dominator are designed specifically for this swap.

Powerband installs ducted, multi-head and split systems from Braemar, Mitsubishi Electric, Hisense, Panasonic and Haier, with AirTouch zoning where it makes sense. Refrigeration work is done by our ARC-authorised technicians and the electrical by our own A-Grade electricians, the same crew that does your solar and heat pump hot water if you are taking the whole house off gas.

The units we recommend, and why

Four we specify most often. We also install Panasonic, Haier and Mitsubishi Electric split systems, and we will tell you when a cheaper unit is the right call.

Braemar dominator series 2 reverse cycle outdoor unit

Braemar Dominator Series 2

Designed to sit in the exact position of a ducted gas heater, so the swap uses your existing ducts and plenum. Zone control via wired controller and RF sensors, pipe runs up to 75 metres for flexible outdoor unit placement, R32 refrigerant.

  • Fits the old gas heater's footprint
  • Zone control built in
  • Up to 75m pipe runs

Mitsubishi Electric PEAD-M

The PEAD series is 250mm high across the 5 to 14kW range, which is what makes ducted possible in single-storey homes and units with tight roof space. Up to 125Pa static pressure for long duct runs, Wi-Fi control, R32.

  • 250mm indoor unit
  • 5kW to 14kW
  • 125Pa static pressure

Airtouch 5 zoning controller and app
Zoning and control for any ducted system

AirTouch 5

The controller that turns a ducted system into a zoned one. Run only the rooms you are using from a touchscreen, phone or tablet, with individual temperature sensors per room instead of one thermostat in the hallway.

  • Per-room temperature sensors
  • Phone, tablet and wall control
  • Works with most ducted brands
  • Cuts running cost by conditioning fewer rooms

Manufacturer warranties apply to every unit, with terms varying by brand and model. Ask us for the warranty details on the systems in your quote.

Zoning

How zoning cuts the running cost

A ducted system that conditions every room all day is expensive. One that conditions the rooms you are in is not. That is the whole idea.

Airtouch 5 app showing zone-by-zone temperature control
  1. 01
    Dampers in the ductwork

Motorised dampers are fitted in the duct run to each zone or room.

  2. 02
    A sensor in each zone

Each zone gets its own temperature sensor or wall control that talks to the central unit.

  3. 03
Air goes where it is needed

When a zone hits temperature or is switched off, its damper closes and the system conditions only the rooms in use.

  4. 04
    Less run time, lower bills

The compressor does less work, the system lasts longer, and you stop paying to heat empty bedrooms all day.

Rebates and running costs

Cheaper to install, cheaper to run

The VEU discount comes off the install. The savings on gas come every quarter after that.

01
Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU)

Discounts on efficient reverse cycle systems, with the largest discounts when you are replacing gas heating. Applied on the quote.

02
No more gas supply charge

Once heating is electric, most homes are one appliance away from abolishing the gas meter and the daily supply charge that comes with it.

03
Run it on your own solar

Reverse cycle in the middle of a sunny winter day runs almost free on a solar system. We can size the panels to the heating load if you are doing both.

Why Powerband

Heating and cooling from the crew that does the whole house

Plenty of air conditioning companies. Very few that also do the solar, the hot water and the gas disconnection.

01
ARC authorised, A-Grade installed

Refrigeration work by ARC-authorised technicians, electrical by our own A-Grade electricians. One crew on site, nothing subcontracted.

02
We reuse your ducts where we can

Replacing ducted gas heating with reverse cycle usually means the same ducts, same outlets and same return, with the unit in the same spot. That is the single biggest cost saving in the job and most quotes ignore it.

03
VEU discount on the quote

Gas-to-electric heating swaps qualify for Victorian Energy Upgrades discounts. We apply them before you sign, not as a rebate you chase later.

04
Sized for the whole house, not the brochure

Load calculated room by room, ducts checked, zoning designed around how you live. If you are also going solar or off gas entirely, it is designed to fit that plan.

The whole experience of working with Powerband has been fantastic. From the get go they were helpful with the design, requirements and answering all the questions we had about the install. We couldn't be happier with choosing them for the job. Special thanks to Bailey and the team for getting the entire installation done in one day it was a huge job so for it to be done and to such a high standard is much appreciated Thanks everyone at Powerband for all you've done

We have just had a Braemer Dominator reverse cycle ducted system installed by the Powerband Electrical team to replace our gas-fired system. We were very happy with the whole process, from the sales/design discussions with Dayle to the installation by the team led by Julian and including Logan and Darren. Using the existing ducting had its challenges but the team overcame them well. Julian set up the AirTouch5 control system & zoning with us and with a sudden cold snap arriving it has proven simple to use to create a comfortable environment. In fact we are already finding it far more effective system than the considerably larger gas unit and a more uniform heat with less draughts. Thanks to the Powerband team. Ken in Glen Waverley

Petris and his electrical team did 2 inverter airconditioner installs as part of our whole solar system install. Great workers, good thinkers who could sort out a couple of small issues in short order and wonderful people to have around our house. Organised and professional. Highly recommend Powerband.

Had the Powerband team electrify out whole house. Updated the heating / cooling with split systems, replace gas cooktop & hot water and put solar on with a 30kw battery. No gas bill, solar is producing more energy than we consume. These days we barely even have the supply charge. As part of it, they put the package together of what we wanted and needed to future proof our house and showed us several options for paying for it, in the end we opted for a 5-year interest free loan. Looking at our numbers, most of the loan will be paid off from the savings from our gas and electricity savings. All the work and upgrades done and barely any out of pocket cost, nice.... The team were great - worked in with timing for the jobs when it worked for us. The boys on site were all great, friendly, polite and professional. Did the job well and packed up (and cleaned up) well. Happy to recommend Powerband to anyone wanting to electrify their house in a cost-effective way.

FAQ

Heating and cooling questions

Anything else, call 0466 355 441. You will get a technician, not a salesperson.

Can I replace ducted gas heating with reverse cycle?

Yes, and it is the most common job we do. Units like the Braemar Dominator are built to sit exactly where the gas heater was and connect to the existing ducts. You get heating in winter, cooling in summer, no gas bill and a VEU discount on the install.

How much does ducted reverse cycle cost in Melbourne?

It depends on house size, whether the ducts can be reused, zoning and the brand. A straight gas-to-reverse-cycle swap using existing ducts is at the lower end; a new install with zoning and new ductwork is higher. We quote a fixed after-VEU price at the site inspection.

Ducted or split systems?

Ducted for whole-home comfort and a clean look, especially if you already have ducts. Splits when you want to condition a few rooms, have no roof space, or want the lowest upfront cost. Plenty of Melbourne homes do a ducted system for the living areas and a split in a bedroom or home office.

Is zoning worth it?

In a family home, almost always. Conditioning three rooms instead of eight is the difference between a system that costs a few dollars a day to run and one that costs a lot more. AirTouch 5 can also be added to many existing ducted systems.

What rebates are available for heating and cooling in Victoria?

Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) offers discounts on efficient reverse cycle systems, with larger discounts when you are replacing gas heating. Eligibility depends on the property and the system, and we confirm it before you commit.

How long does installation take?

A ducted replacement using existing ducts is typically one day. A new ducted install with zoning is one to two days. A split system is a few hours.

Do you service commercial properties?

Yes. Ducted and split systems for offices, retail and light commercial across Melbourne, including replacing gas heating in older commercial buildings.

Which suburbs do you cover?

All of Melbourne, from the inner suburbs to the Mornington Peninsula. We are based in Somerville. See the locations page or call and we will confirm.
