Usually we recommend replacing them. Old gas heating ducts are often perished, undersized or under-insulated for cooling, so we fit new R1.5 insulated ducts sized to the new unit. Where the ducts cannot be replaced, often in double-storey homes, a Braemar Dominator keeps the existing ducts and controls the airflow through them. We check which applies at the site visit.

Can I replace ducted gas heating with reverse cycle?

Yes, and it is the most common job we do. We replace the gas heater with a ducted reverse cycle unit and the old ducts with new R1.5 insulated ducts. Where the ducts cannot be replaced, often in double-storey homes, we fit a Braemar Dominator, which keeps the existing ducts and controls the airflow. You get heating in winter, cooling in summer, no gas bill and a VEU discount on the install.

How much does ducted reverse cycle cost in Melbourne?

It depends on house size, the duct runs, zoning and the unit. New R1.5 ducts and zoning are included in the quote, and a Braemar Dominator on the existing ducts is used where the ducts cannot be replaced. We quote a fixed after-VEU price at the site inspection.

Ducted or split systems?

Ducted for whole-home comfort and a clean look, especially if you already have ducts. Splits when you want to condition a few rooms, have no roof space, or want the lowest upfront cost. Plenty of Melbourne homes do a ducted system for the living areas and a split in a bedroom or home office.

In a family home, almost always. Conditioning three rooms instead of eight is the difference between a system that costs a few dollars a day to run and one that costs a lot more. AirTouch 5 can also be added to many existing ducted systems.

What rebates are available for heating and cooling in Victoria?

Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) offers discounts on efficient reverse cycle systems, with larger discounts when you are replacing gas heating. Eligibility depends on the property and the system, and we confirm it before you commit.

How long does installation take?

Replacing ducted gas with reverse cycle and new R1.5 ducts is typically one to two days. A split system is a few hours.
