Home charging done right

The last fossil fuel to go

An EV charger is the biggest single load most homes will ever add, and it runs for hours at a time. That makes it licensed electrical work, not a DIY plug-in, and it makes the switchboard check the most important ten minutes of the job. Get the circuit, the load management and the solar integration right and the car charges from your roof for next to nothing. Get it wrong and you trip the mains every evening.

Powerband installs Tesla Wall Connectors, Sigenergy AC and DC chargers and Zappi across Melbourne, for homes, workplaces and apartment buildings. If you already have solar and a battery we integrate the charger with it; if you are taking the whole house off gas, the charger is designed in from the start.

Chargers we install

Four chargers we recommend, and why

The right charger depends on your car, your electrical supply and whether solar or a home battery is part of the plan. We will tell you which charger fits, and why.

How it works

From site check to first charge

Four steps, usually done in half a day. The first one is the one that matters.

Zappi ev charger installed on a garage wall by powerband electrical
  1. 01
    Site and switchboard check

We look at your supply (single or three phase), the switchboard capacity and where the car actually parks. This decides the charger, the cable run and whether any upgrade is needed.

  2. 02
    Dedicated circuit

An EV charger gets its own protected circuit from the switchboard, sized for continuous load. Never a shared power point.

  3. 03
    Charger mounted and commissioned

Wall-mounted where the cable reaches the port comfortably, connected to Wi-Fi, solar integration and scheduling set up on your phone before we leave.

  4. 04
    Certificate of Electrical Safety

Every install is signed off with a CES by our A-Grade electrician. You get the paperwork, not just the charger.

Running costs

Fuel your car from your roof

The charger is a one-off cost. What it costs to fill the car every week depends on how it is set up.

01
Charge on surplus solar

A solar-aware charger fills the car with power you would otherwise export for a few cents. On a decent system, most of your driving is free.

02
Charge on off-peak

Where solar is not enough, scheduling shifts charging to the cheapest tariff window overnight. Set once in the app.

03
Pair it with solar and battery

No home charger rebate exists in Victoria right now, but the solar and battery you pair it with attract Solar Victoria and federal incentives, applied on the quote.

Why Powerband

EV charging from the crew that does the whole house

Plenty of people will screw a charger to a wall. The switchboard, the solar integration and the paperwork are the job.

01
A-Grade electricians, every install

REC 32300, VBA registered, ARC authorised, CEC accredited. EV chargers are a high-load circuit and this is licensed electrical work, so we treat it that way.

02
Wired to your solar

Whether it is Sigen, Zappi or a Tesla Wall Connector, we set it up to charge on surplus solar first. A charger that only pulls from the grid at night is leaving money on the roof.

03
Switchboard checked before we quote

We tell you at the inspection whether your board can take it, and include any upgrade in the fixed price. No surprises on the day.

04
Home, commercial and strata

Single driveways, fleet depots, apartment car parks with load management and per-bay metering. We prepare the technical submission for owners corporations.

The whole experience of working with Powerband has been fantastic. From the get go they were helpful with the design, requirements and answering all the questions we had about the install. We couldn't be happier with choosing them for the job. Special thanks to Bailey and the team for getting the entire installation done in one day it was a huge job so for it to be done and to such a high standard is much appreciated Thanks everyone at Powerband for all you've done

We have just had a Braemer Dominator reverse cycle ducted system installed by the Powerband Electrical team to replace our gas-fired system. We were very happy with the whole process, from the sales/design discussions with Dayle to the installation by the team led by Julian and including Logan and Darren. Using the existing ducting had its challenges but the team overcame them well. Julian set up the AirTouch5 control system & zoning with us and with a sudden cold snap arriving it has proven simple to use to create a comfortable environment. In fact we are already finding it far more effective system than the considerably larger gas unit and a more uniform heat with less draughts. Thanks to the Powerband team. Ken in Glen Waverley

Petris and his electrical team did 2 inverter airconditioner installs as part of our whole solar system install. Great workers, good thinkers who could sort out a couple of small issues in short order and wonderful people to have around our house. Organised and professional. Highly recommend Powerband.

Had the Powerband team electrify out whole house. Updated the heating / cooling with split systems, replace gas cooktop & hot water and put solar on with a 30kw battery. No gas bill, solar is producing more energy than we consume. These days we barely even have the supply charge. As part of it, they put the package together of what we wanted and needed to future proof our house and showed us several options for paying for it, in the end we opted for a 5-year interest free loan. Looking at our numbers, most of the loan will be paid off from the savings from our gas and electricity savings. All the work and upgrades done and barely any out of pocket cost, nice.... The team were great - worked in with timing for the jobs when it worked for us. The boys on site were all great, friendly, polite and professional. Did the job well and packed up (and cleaned up) well. Happy to recommend Powerband to anyone wanting to electrify their house in a cost-effective way.

FAQ

EV charging questions

Anything else, call 0466 355 441. You will get an electrician, not a salesperson.

Do I need three-phase power for an EV charger?

No. Most Melbourne homes are single phase, and a 32A single-phase circuit delivers around 7kW, which replenishes a normal day's driving overnight. Three phase allows 11kW (Tesla Wall Connector) or up to 22kW (Sigen, Zappi) for faster charging.

How much range does an hour of charging add?

Roughly 40km per hour on a 7kW single-phase charger, up to 75km on an 11kW Tesla Wall Connector into a Tesla, and around 150km on the 25kW Sigen DC module. It depends on the car as well as the charger.

Can I charge my car from my solar panels?

Yes, with a solar-aware charger and correct commissioning. Sigen chargers do it natively within a Sigenergy system; Zappi does it with any brand of solar. We set the solar mode up on the day.

How much does EV charger installation cost in Melbourne?

It depends on the charger, the distance from the switchboard to the parking spot, and whether the board needs work. We give a fixed price after the site inspection, charger and install together.

Can you install an EV charger in an apartment or townhouse?

Yes. Shared-supply properties need load management so the building's capacity is not exceeded, per-bay metering if usage is billed individually, and owners corporation approval. We prepare the technical submission and handle the install.

Do you install commercial and fleet chargers?

Yes. Workplace, fleet and customer charging across Melbourne, including load management across multiple bays and integration with commercial solar.

Are there rebates for EV chargers in Victoria?

Not currently for home chargers. Where a charger is installed alongside a solar and battery system, the solar and battery attract Solar Victoria and federal incentives, and we apply those on the quote.

Which suburbs do you cover?

All of Melbourne, from the inner suburbs to the Mornington Peninsula. We are based in Somerville. See the locations page or call and we will confirm.
