The last gas appliance

Faster, cleaner, and usually the final step off gas

Induction heats the pan directly through a magnetic field, so it boils faster than gas, holds a simmer more precisely, and puts no combustion products into the kitchen. For most Melbourne homes the cooktop is also the last gas appliance left once heating and hot water have gone electric, which means replacing it lets you abolish the gas meter and stop paying the supply charge altogether.

Powerband does the whole changeover in one visit: dedicated circuit, cooktop install, gas cap-off and paperwork. If your heating or hot water is still on gas, we can plan the whole switch with you and stage it so each step pays for itself.

What the job includes

More than swapping a cooktop

A gas-to-induction changeover is an electrical job first. Here is what is actually involved.

01
Cooktop supply, or bring your own

We can supply and install an induction cooktop sized to your benchtop cut-out, or install one you have already bought. Either way we check the cut-out, the clearances and the circuit before the old gas unit comes out.

02
A dedicated circuit

Induction draws far more than a gas cooktop's ignition circuit. It needs its own protected 32A circuit from the switchboard, and often a new cable run. That is the part of the job that needs an A-Grade electrician.

03
Gas disconnection and cap-off

The gas line to the cooktop is disconnected and capped by our licensed plumber. If the cooktop was the last gas appliance, we can arrange the meter to be abolished so the supply charge stops.

04
Switchboard check

Older boards sometimes need a new circuit breaker or an RCD to take the extra load. We tell you at the quote stage and include it in the fixed price.

How it works

From quote to first boil

Four steps, usually done in a day.

  1. 01
    Quote and check

Photos of your switchboard and cooktop cut-out are usually enough to quote. We confirm on site before any work starts.

  2. 02
    New circuit run

A dedicated circuit from the switchboard to the kitchen, with the cable route agreed with you first.

  3. 03
Old gas cooktop out, induction in

Gas disconnected and capped, new cooktop fitted to the benchtop and wired in.

  4. 04
    Test, clean up, cook

Everything tested, Certificate of Electrical Safety issued, and a two-minute run-through of how induction differs from gas.

Rebates and running costs

Cheaper to install, cheaper to run

The VEU discount comes off the install. The gas bill stops the day the meter comes off.

01
Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU)

A discount for replacing a gas cooktop with induction, applied on the quote and lodged by us.

02
No more gas supply charge

If the cooktop is your last gas appliance, we arrange the meter abolishment. The daily supply charge, often several hundred dollars a year, stops.

03
Cook on your own solar

Induction is electric, so daytime cooking runs on your solar. Add a battery and dinner does too.

Why Powerband

Induction from the crew that does the whole house

An appliance store sells you the cooktop. The circuit, the gas cap-off and the switchboard are the job, and that is us.

01
Electrician and plumber, one visit

Induction changeovers need both trades. We bring both, so the gas is capped and the circuit is live in the same appointment.

02
VEU discount applied

Replacing a gas cooktop with induction qualifies for a Victorian Energy Upgrades discount. We apply it on the quote and lodge it for you.

03
The last step off gas

For most homes the cooktop is the final gas appliance. We can abolish the gas meter at the same time so the daily supply charge disappears, and we do the heating and hot water if they are still on gas.

04
A-Grade licensed, fully insured

REC 32300, VBA registered, every install signed off with a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

The whole experience of working with Powerband has been fantastic. From the get go they were helpful with the design, requirements and answering all the questions we had about the install. We couldn't be happier with choosing them for the job. Special thanks to Bailey and the team for getting the entire installation done in one day it was a huge job so for it to be done and to such a high standard is much appreciated Thanks everyone at Powerband for all you've done

We have just had a Braemer Dominator reverse cycle ducted system installed by the Powerband Electrical team to replace our gas-fired system. We were very happy with the whole process, from the sales/design discussions with Dayle to the installation by the team led by Julian and including Logan and Darren. Using the existing ducting had its challenges but the team overcame them well. Julian set up the AirTouch5 control system & zoning with us and with a sudden cold snap arriving it has proven simple to use to create a comfortable environment. In fact we are already finding it far more effective system than the considerably larger gas unit and a more uniform heat with less draughts. Thanks to the Powerband team. Ken in Glen Waverley

Petris and his electrical team did 2 inverter airconditioner installs as part of our whole solar system install. Great workers, good thinkers who could sort out a couple of small issues in short order and wonderful people to have around our house. Organised and professional. Highly recommend Powerband.

Had the Powerband team electrify out whole house. Updated the heating / cooling with split systems, replace gas cooktop & hot water and put solar on with a 30kw battery. No gas bill, solar is producing more energy than we consume. These days we barely even have the supply charge. As part of it, they put the package together of what we wanted and needed to future proof our house and showed us several options for paying for it, in the end we opted for a 5-year interest free loan. Looking at our numbers, most of the loan will be paid off from the savings from our gas and electricity savings. All the work and upgrades done and barely any out of pocket cost, nice.... The team were great - worked in with timing for the jobs when it worked for us. The boys on site were all great, friendly, polite and professional. Did the job well and packed up (and cleaned up) well. Happy to recommend Powerband to anyone wanting to electrify their house in a cost-effective way.

FAQ

Induction questions

Anything else, call 0466 355 441. You will get an electrician, not a salesperson.

Why switch from gas to induction?

Faster boil times, precise temperature control, a flat surface that wipes clean, and no combustion in the kitchen. Gas cooktops release nitrogen dioxide and other pollutants indoors; induction does not. It is also usually the last gas appliance standing, so removing it lets you cancel the gas account.

How much does an induction cooktop installation cost in Melbourne?

It depends on the cooktop, the distance from your switchboard to the kitchen, and whether the board needs work. The VEU discount comes off the top. We quote a fixed price from switchboard and kitchen photos, confirmed on site.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard for induction?

Sometimes. Induction needs a dedicated 32A circuit. Most modern boards take it without issue; older boards may need a breaker or RCD added. We check before we quote.

Will my pots and pans work on induction?

Anything magnetic works: cast iron, enamelled cast iron, most stainless steel. Aluminium, copper and glass do not, unless they have a magnetic base. If a magnet sticks to the bottom, you are fine.

Is there a rebate for switching to induction in Victoria?

Yes. Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) offers a discount for replacing a gas cooktop with an induction cooktop. Eligibility depends on the property, and we confirm it before you commit.

How long does the changeover take?

Usually half a day to a day, including the new circuit, the gas cap-off and the cooktop install. Longer cable runs or switchboard work can add time, and we tell you in advance.

Can you install an induction cooktop I have already bought?

Yes. Send us the model and a photo of the cut-out and we will quote the circuit, the install and the gas disconnection.

Which suburbs do you cover?

All of Melbourne, from the inner suburbs to the Mornington Peninsula. We are based in Somerville. See the locations page or call and we will confirm.
